What Transportation Tests Are Required for Packaging?

The purpose of packaging and transportation is to minimize the damage to the product during the transportation and circulation process, ensure the safety of the product, facilitate storage, transportation, loading and unloading, and speed up the handover point inspection. People maijnly pack for transportation, storage and transportation. There are various ways and shapes of packaging and transportation. The materials and textures are different, and the degrees of packaging are also different, which leads to the diversity of packaging and transportation, such as paper packaging, metal packaging, wooden packaging, plastic packaging, film packaging and other material types. Its main function is to protect the goods, prevent the goods from being damaged during storage and transportation and avoid the possible impact of various external conditions on the goods during transportation to the greatest extent, so as to facilitate inspection, counting and distribution.

1. Reasons for transportation test for packaging of packaged products

The purpose of packaging is to protect the product from reaching its destination safely. However, in the process of handling, it will be subjected to shocks such as drop, slope slip, vibration, etc., which will affect the quality of the item. Therefore, pre-assessing and guaranteeing the quality of the packaging in the transport environment is to protect the product from foreseeable hazards. Transportation test for packaging can improve the safety performance of product packaging and transportation, prevent or reduce product losses during transportation and handling and maintain the direct interests of enterprises.

Therefore, it is very necessary to carry out a series of reliability tests on packaged and transported products. Let's take a look at how the packaging and transportation test is carried out!

2. Transportation test for packaging

There are vibration test, impact test (shock, drop, collision, rolling, tipping, etc.), temperature and humidity treatment test, compression test, etc. Usually, transportation test for packaging service includes various test items such as vibration, pressure, shock, temperature and humidity that the packaging product may experience during actual transportation, so as to evaluate the impact of environmental factors on the product and the protection performance of the packaging.

3. Commonly used transportation test for packaging standards

(1) ASTM standards

ASTM package testing is mainly divided into impact resistance performance like ASTM D 4003-98 (2003) and ASTM D 5277-92 (2008), vibration resistance test performance like ASTMD3580-95 (2004), mechanical handling performance like ASTMD6055-96 (2007), pressure resistance performance like ASTMD642-00 (2005) and weather resistance performance like ASTMD4332-01 (2006).

(2) ISO standards

Like the above ASTM standards, there are different standards for different test items, which are briefly listed below, such as ISO13355:2001 random vibration test of packaging and transportation, ISO2244:2000 horizontal impact test method of packaging and transportation, ISO2876:1985 rolling test of packaging and transportation, etc.

(3) ISTA standards

ISTA package testing has six series.Series one: no simulated transportation tests at all, including ISTA1A, 1B, 1C, 1D, 1E, 1G, 1H. Series two: some simulated transportation tests, including ISTA2A, 2B, 2C, 2F. Series three: fully simulated transportation tests, including ISTA3A, 3E, 3F, 3H. Series four: strengthen the simulation test. Series five: membership performance test. Series six: corporate standards set by Amazon. Each series is divided into multiple test standards according to different transportation methods or different packages.
